Optimizing products to make it searchable
by Dufa Staff | 3 September 2020
This guide provides you with tips to optimize your products to make it searchable.
General Tips:
Completeness: Make sure every section of your Product is filled. Incomplete information or pictures do not give a professional look to your product page and shows a lack of interest in turn hurting your brand. Also, the more content you provide about your product the more chances of it coming up in search results.
Spell Checks: Ensure All text whether Titles, Descriptions or Tags are not misspelt. Take an extra 5 minutes to go over all the details on each product before you publish. Titles, descriptions and tags are used for search engine optimization and incorrect spellings will prevent your products from coming up in search results.
Keywords and Tags: Use appropriate keywords for your titles, descriptions, and tags. Buyers use these keywords to search products and to have your product show up in the top rankings of search results, you need to use all possible relevant keywords pertaining to your product.
Be transparent: Ensure you are providing accurate information at all times for your product, the materials used, styles, inventory, and pricing.
Up to date: Ensure your store is up to date in terms of pricing, discounts, or inventory.
Images: Ensure you use consistent images that reflects your brand. All products must have similar backgrounds, with the similar top, bottom alignments. All images must be high quality and of similar resolution and size. Make sure you are using original images and not stock photos. The product pictures must be yours and not borrowed. If you have variants, ensure you show the image of the variants as well.
Tips for different sections of your Product page:
Images: Product images is the first thing customers will see on your page Images speak directly to your audience, making your product page and content relatable and bringing out an emotional response from the customer. Hence, you need to make sure you have images that show your product in the most flattering way possible. Products with accurate, clear, suitable photos show higher conversion rates, draw more interest from users, and get more social media shares than products with low-resolution photos (or no product photos at all). People love the visual capabilities of online shopping. Give them what they’re looking for.Ensure you use all the spaces for your images, you can upload up to 5 images for each product taken in different angles and for different variations you offer. Make sure the images are high quality, good resolution, consistent images taken with good lighting. Always use consistent props and backgrounds and keep your brand in mind.To help your product come up in organic search results, you can take care of a few basic things to optimize your product images:
- File names: Image files should be named per the product which could be the product title. This will help Google understand what’s in your images, which will help it know when to show them to searchers.
- Example: Name your file as ‘Yellow Topaz and White Gold Dangler Earring.jpg’ rather than ‘IMG6755.jpg’
- Alt tags: Every product image on your site should have an alt tag. Alt tags are what screen readers display in place of images, so they’re key for accessibility. Dufa takes care of Alt tags using the File names you upload.
- Captions: Captions may not make sense on product pages, but if you’re showing product images in blog posts, roundups, etc., captions help Google make sense of your images and serve them in relevant searches.
Refer to Best Practices for your product pictures to know more.
Product Title: The keywords in your Product title is just one of the ways Dufa matches the buyers search results with your products.
Write simple, candid, descriptive titles that make it easy for shoppers to see what you’re selling in just a glance. Use leading keywords that best describe what your item is since that’s what shoppers see first when searching, especially on mobile devices. Think about what keywords a buyer would search for to find your product. Use the words in the Title that best describes your product, with specific attributes such as color, materials or it’s uses.
Example 1:
Gorgeous Blue Pearl and Sterling Silver Dangler Earrings
Example 2:
Lightweight Sustainable Pure Organic Cotton Boho Tunic (Khaki)
However, adding long lists of keywords to your titles may confuse buyers. Stray away from long wordy titles which can confuse buyers on what you are selling.
For example, this title below may confuse your buyers:
“Topaz white gold earrings yellow stone personalized gift change stones blue green gold available”
Even though this title has some important keywords and covers the basics including material, the following would be a better title for the buyer to understand immediately:
“Customizable White Gold and Topaz earrings in different colors”
Product Description: The more you describe your product, the better your chances of your product being sold as soon it’s found. The product description must explain exactly what your product is about, how was it made and what makes it unique and any story behind your creation and inspiration. Use short descriptive sentences and include specific details such as the item’s dimensions, material or any customizations and personalization you offer.
Tags: Tags are a get way to get your product found by adding your custom keywords. On Dufa, you can include 10 phrases that describe best describe your product. Each tag you add is a chance to match with your buyers search, so make sure you fill all the 10 spots for your product and use varied unique keywords and tag your products.
Tips on using Tags:
- Use all 10 tags: Make sure you are using all 10 tags
- Use multi-word phrases: You can use phrases instead on single words. Use spaces as well. Such as ‘custom hoops’ or ‘minimalistic coffee table’
- Different spellings: Some use different spellings to search product such as ‘jewellery’ or ‘jewelry’ or ‘colorful’ v/s ‘colourful’ so make sure you include such words as tags if you haven’t used them in your title.
- Unique tags: Try to come up with unique tags to include material and your keyword so you get higher search results such as ‘sustainable cotton pyjamas’
- Do not to repeat tags: Try to repeat the same words in different tags such as ‘cotton pyjamas’ and ‘cotton’. Make the most of the 10 tags.
- Do a spell check: Do not misspell your tags else these won’t come up in your search results. Take the extra 5 minutes to make sure there are no typos.
- Avoid category subcategory in tags: Dufa already considers the category and subcategory in your search, so for tags avoid using the ‘category name’ unless you are combining it with a unique word such as ‘traditional kaddas’
- Singular/ Plurals: Dufa will use the root word for search results, hence don’t worry about adding plurals as well as singular words in your tags; one of them will suffice.
- Use materials/techniques: Add tags which describe your material or technique of creating the product. Combine that with another keyword example: distressed mahogany wood or hand-embroidered bibs.
- Use occasions in tags: Using occasions in tags is a great way of getting your product found. Refresh your tags list by occasion, by tagging it as ‘diwali gift’ or ‘rakshabandhan’. Though Occasions is a separate attribute, combining it with other words as a tag can be helpful.
- Use recipient in tags: If your product can be gifted to mothers or for sisters, make sure you tag them relevantly. Though Recipient is a separate attribute, combining it with other words as a tag can be helpful.
- Add utilitarian keywords: If your product solves certain problems such as space issues you can use small space furniture or closet organizer as your tags.
- Style and Sizes: You can include size or style in tags such as high-back chair or gothic stone table.
Attributes and Variants: Attributes are the additional details about your product. These are specific based on the category and subcategory chosen. Attributes makes it easy for users to find your products as it aids customers to filter exactly what they need based on the attributes you set. This will not only help users filter products based on attributes but also aids in the customer’s shopping experience as they can see what your product is about in one quick glance.
Some attributes are more general, such as color and material, while others are specific to the category you choose, such as pattern or style for clothing or home and living. While some attributes are optional, we highly recommend you fill all attributes pertaining to your product.
Note: You don’t need to add tags that are exact matches for attributes you’ve already added.
Inventory and Pricing: Ensure your inventory and pricing is always up to date. Note that out of stock products come lower in the search results, so ensure your inventory is always up to date. If you have variants, ensure you have inventory and pricing updated per variant. Pricing is a filter on search, hence make sure you price your products appropriately.
Processing Times & Shipping: Some customers search for products by the processing times and shipping charges. Make sure you update the accurate information for each of your products. Most customers are enticed by free shipping and faster processing times, so if you have some products that can be good candidates for free shipping, make sure you mark them appropriately so customers are routed to your products and in turn your store.
